What to Know
A vehicle apparently rammed into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday, according to local police and the FBI, causing a fire. Authorities confirmed that shots were fired.
No community members were injured in the attack, according to local police, and the assailant is dead.
A security officer at the synagogue engaged the assailant, was injured and is expected to recover, according to police.
Police said the motive was not clear at this time.
Temple Israel is one of the largest Reform congregations in the United States.
The incident comes as Jewish communities are already on high alert because of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, which has already resulted in attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets around the world.
Since the conflict began Feb. 28, the Secure Community Network has tracked an increase in threats and harassment targeting the Jewish community.
What to Say
Make clear the real threat that antisemitism poses to Jewish communities:
“Today’s attack shows us the danger of antisemitism and the very real threat it poses to our Jewish communities.”
“Synagogues in the United States are targets for those who traffic in hate and conspiracy theories. The tragedies at Chabad of Poway and Tree of Life show us why we all must fight hate and invest further in communal security.”
Focus on the need for everyone to speak out against antisemitism.
“All of us must condemn antisemitism and work to fight hate in our communities.”
“Hate has no place in our society.”
“No one should have to fear for their safety while practicing their faith.”
Explain that attacks on Jews do not represent legitimate critiques of war.
“It is antisemitic to protest the war in Iran or the policies of the Israeli government at synagogues, Jewish community centers, Hillels, or other Jewish community institutions.”
“Since the start of the latest Mideast conflict, synagogues from Canada to Belgium have faced attacks. Violence directed at Jewish places of worship is antisemitism, not a form of legitimate debate.”
Call for additional security funding to safeguard Jewish communities against ongoing threats
“We must meet the current moment with urgent, coordinated action to protect our communities and uphold the basic right of every American to live without fear.”
“Security has become one of the leading financial burdens for Jewish communities. The cost of security personnel has become prohibitive for Jewish communal institutions.
“Additional federal funding streams are needed to help Jewish communities shoulder the growing cost of hiring and retaining trained security personnel to safeguard their institutions.”
“Given the current environment, robust federal support for security programs are essential to prevent and detect violence against the Jewish community before it occurs.”
Action Item Checklist
Call out antisemitism wherever and whenever it occurs, as swiftly as possible.
Encourage public officials and other community partners to unequivocally condemn and combat rising antisemitic violence and thank those who do.
Advocate for state and federal legislation to support enhanced security tools for Jewish facilities and organizations.
